This article will describe the proper way to set up your NAS drive using Network Shares with the Secure-i system and start recording with it. In this article we will be using a Buffalo Link Station, but any NAS that supports Network Shares is compatible.
NAS Configuration
- Find the IP address of your Buffalo drive, if you need assistance you can download and install the NAS Navigator software.
- Open your web browser and enter the IP address of the Buffalo drive
- Follow the steps in the "Getting Started" wizard
- Once logged into the NAS, click "Advanced Settings"
- Once inside Advanced Settings, click on the
next to "Groups"
- Click
in the top left
- Fill out the Group settings page as shown below:
**Make sure to Enable Quota and set the "Quota Capacity" using the total size of the drive. For a quick reference use the numbers below.
1TB = 915GB, 2TB = 1750GB

- Now click "Edit" next to our new AVHS group and make sure our folder share has Read and Write permissions. It should look like the picture below.
- Click OK and then Close
- Next click the
button next to "Users"
- Click
in the top left
- Fill out the User Settings page as shown below, using an easy to remember username and password such as "cam1" for both fields. You will NEED to make sure that both the username and the password match.

(Total size of drive in GB) / (Total number of cameras) = Quota Capacity for each camera
1TB = 915GB, 2TB = 1750GB

- Repeat Steps 12 - 14 until you have 1 user account per camera for every camera on the account
- Click Close after all user accounts have been created
- Click the
button next to "Folder Setup"
- Click on the name "share"
- Click Edit at the bottom
- For the "Recycle Bin" option, select the Disable radio button
- Click OK
- Next we want to set a static IP address for your Buffalo NAS to ensure your cameras always know where to look. To do this click "Network" group in the menu on the left hand side.
- Click the
button next to "IP Address"
- Click on blue link "LAN Port 1"
- Click "Edit"
- For the "DHCP" option select the Disable radio button
- Verify the IP Address and Subnet Mask are valid and click "OK"
- Then close out of your Buffalo NAS
Camera Configuration
- Log into your customer portal account
- Click the
button, then click "Go to advanced settings"
- Select the first device in your list and click on the name to open the settings for that device
- Look to the right until you see the "Storage" section and click Manage under Network share
- Here you will see settings to connect your camera to the NAS, fill out the settings as follows and use the example below:
Share name: share
Server: local IP address or drive name
User: username setup from previous steps
Password: password associated with username used
**If you are using an IP address please make sure to follow Steps 22 - 27 of NAS Configuration. Otherwise your cameras will likely lose connectivity to your NAS in the future. - After entering the settings click "Connect"*
- If successful you should see the Status change to Ready, also shown here:
- Repeat Steps 3 - 7 for each camera on the account
Remember each camera should be using a different user account during this setup. These accounts were setup on Steps 11-15 of NAS Configuration. - You should now see Usage stats for your Network Share
- Lastly we need to now configure our recordings and record to our new Network share. To do this follow the steps located in the article How To Configure Recordings On Secure-i 3.3
- Done
*After clicking 'Connect', if the error message 'Invalid parameters, could not mount disk' appears, make sure the camera's SMB setting is on version 1 or version 2 (as opposed to Auto). This is found in the camera UI, a.k.a. root access. Reach out to Axis tech support (800-444-2947) if necessary for additional details.
